oakley Eyeshade Heritage

White frame with Grey lense

 SeaFoam frame with Grey lense

Celebrating the 30th anniversary of Oakley performance eyewear, the Heritage™ Collection salutes the evolution of a revolution by bringing back vintage rarities for a limited time. It’s a chance to own a piece of history with a classic look that shows the respect for sport heritage and smooth retro style. Oakley Eyeshades™, Razor Blades™ and Frogskins® will be offered with commemorative highlights and collectible extras, and oakley are adding riffs to a few contemporary designs so today’s athletes can carry the colors of history and pride.

A generic accessory became vital equipment when Oakley created the original Eyeshades sunglass. Featuring “2014” inside the frame, the Heritage Collection edition of this world-first performance eyewear is engineered with improved nose pad construction. It comes with two sets of earstems (curved and straight), as well as a collectors pin sticker and a custom Microclear™ bag for lens cleaning and frame storage.

Oakley Razor Blades continued the revolution that Eyeshades began. The Heritage Collection has Razor Blades in multiple lens/frame color combinations, and each collectible comes with both straight and “trigger” shaped earstems, and custom Microclear bag.

Topping off the trio is a lifestyle sunglass called Frogskins, the very first dual-lens design. With the Heritage Collection edition, you’ll get a collectors pin and sticker, plus a custom Microclear bag. This retro eyewear brings a slice of originality to your street look. The shape is carved right out of sunglass history, and the frame is crafted with contrast earstems that carry one of oakley's earliest logos.

To let athletes pay tribute to sport heritage while enjoying state-of-the-art technology, the collection includes renditions of RadarLock™, Radar®, Flak Jacket® XLJ, and Racing Jacket®. Oakley's artists accented the top edge of each frame with a printed stripe graphic that carries the colors of the original eyewear creations from 30 years ago. A “30” graphic is laser etched at the corner of the lens in each edition, and as with all designs in the Heritage Collection, the custom Microclear bag is decked with art that celebrates the anniversary.

Oakley began it’s meteoric accent as a sports and lifestyle company by developing a motorcycle grip of soft rubber that was comfortable in all conditions. Still largely focused on the motorcross market, the next project the Southern California based company would tackle was  O Frame MX Goggle, which combined excellent peripheral vision, a optimized low profile fit, and razor sharp clarity, to raise the bar for performance in the early 1980s.

Where the story becomes relevant to cycling is in 1984, when founder Jim Jannard helped reinvent performance eyewear with the iconic Eyeshades. Over the top in appearance, the glasses utilized a similar lens shape to the O Frame goggles, and offered many of the same optical advantages.

To market the outlandish design, the company reached out to Greg LeMond. While cycling at this point was still very much rooted in traditions, Greg had always been one to buck trends, and the”garish” sunglasses worn by the American drew frowns from the European establishment. Yet, LeMond kept winning on cycling’s biggest stages, and soon everyone wanted a pair of Eyeshades.
